• RTFKT CTO Samuel Cardillo warned people to be aware that companies such as Microsoft, Apple, and others will never ask for anyone’s password, private key, or any other form of private information via phone or email.
Nike subsidiary brand RTFKT has been hit by a malicious phishing attack, leaving its chief operating officer (COO) Nikhil Gopalani out of pocket to the tune of nearly $200,000 in NFTs.
The attack saw a scammer using the same phone number as Gopalani’s Apple ID to access his wallet, stealing 19 CloneX NFTs, 18 RTKFT Space Pods, 17 Loot Pods, 11 CryptoKicks, and 19 RTFKT Animus Eggs. OpenSea data indicates that the total value of the stolen assets is approximately $138,000 for the CloneX NFTs, $6,300 for the Space Pods, $6,200 for the Loot Pods, $3,000 for the CryptoKicks, and $20,200 for the Animus Eggs, making the total loss estimated to be around $184,000.
Gopalani took to Twitter to express his disappointment and hurt, expressing his hope that whoever purchased his NFTs would enjoy them.
RTFKT CTO Samuel Cardillo addressed the hack, warning the public to be aware that companies such as Microsoft, Apple, and others will never ask for anyone’s password, private key, or any other form of private information via phone or email. Cardillo further revealed that a lawful agency had been contacted in order to conduct a proper investigation into the incident.
The attack is a timely reminder of the potential risks associated with investing in NFTs, and the importance of keeping one’s wallet secure at all times. With the NFT market continuing to expand, it is important to keep vigilance against malicious actors and, as Cardillo suggests, to be aware of any suspicious requests for information.
